Sometimes you have a meeting that blows you away…. and not in a good way!
I had a conversation recently with a club secretary, I won’t mention the Golf Club in question but they are still clinging to out dated attitudes towards memberships.
They have a dwindling membership of under 200 golfers and an average membership age in its seventies….. is this a sustainable business? What does the future of golf hold?
Golf clubs need new members through the doors in order to breath new life into the UK golf industry.
So why do these certain clubs still feel the need to hold interviews with new members?
Rather than asking prospective members to undertake formal interviews and demanding members to conform to outdated dress codes, why not be welcoming, engaging and dare we say it ‘fun’?
I know of very few 20 to 30 year olds who would wish to go through such scrutiny just to play golf.
We wish them the best of luck for the future however fear the worst for clubs with such an ‘old school’ mentality in an ever changing environment.
However, t’s not all bad news…..as we meet and partner with golf clubs across the UK, we see that many have adapted to the changing demands of the modern golfer. Whether through the relaxing club dress codes, being more visitor friendly and are open to offering modern memberships that are more suited to the modern day needs of golfers.
The future is still bright for UK golf, its just sad to know that a small percentage of these stars will burn out and fade into oblivion.
