First of all, congratulations on qualifying for The 2018 Open at Carnoustie, how are you feeling?
“Really excited right now. I managed to play the last 4 holes behind Tiger today (Sunday). I never felt out of my comfort zone & felt as though I belonged here. Really started off embracing it all.”
Tell us how you first got into golf?
“A little different to most youngsters….. I fell into a fish tank and I fractured my skull when I was one. I would only walk on my toes, I couldn’t put my heel on the floor properly so I had to have lots of physio. When I did fall over I wouldn’t put my hands out so, for the first three years at school, I had to wear a crash helmet. I fell into golf because of that. I started when I was nearly three with some balls in the backyard because my Dad said lets try golf to see if it helps with balance & walking. I got my first little club when I was four. At six I got cleared of the whole issue.”
What’s your preparation going to be next?
“Just do what I always do – I won’t do anything that I don’t normally do prep wise. I’m here a bit earlier than most events but apart from that I’ll just get used to different surroundings etc but the rest is the same.”
Who’s your golfing hero and why?
“Tiger Woods – I grew up in generation of him. Due to his dominance & amazing performances in the game that’s why he is my golfing hero.”
If you could choose, who would you like to play in a group with this week?
“Tiger & Justin Rose.”
How has working with Firestart helped your game move up to the next level?
“The support that’s been there has been brilliant. They bought Duncan on board which has been great & resulted in a feeling that someone is there all the time. It’s also a really nice environment to be in – it feels like a family around u where they have your best interests at heart! I really like that.”
After missing a short putt or hitting a poor shot, how do you mentally get passed it?
“_Just move on, I’ve always been good at it. I’ve always had a good
temperament and peace of mind. The more I do that the better I get at it._”
Do you have any teckers for handling first tee nerves?
“Just try zone out, take deep breaths & channel my mind. I’ve been doing some development work where I put myself in a dark room with a candle and focus on flame. If my focus wanders I simply come back it & re focus. This has really helped me on course.”
How will you relax post round?
“Simple – I just leave it all at the course, chill & enjoy the evening with friends & family.”
If you weren’t a professional golfer, what would you be?
“Secret Agent….. although its not a secret anymore!”
What music do you listen to, to get you in the zone?
“I don’t listen to music before I play, I prefer taking in my surroundings & hear the strikes of my shots etc. In my downtime I listen to chart music mainly.”
